About Us

MayneHelps is an initiative of the Mayne Island Collective, originally launched by the Mayne Island Assisted Living Society (MIALS) in November 2023. In November 2024, the program transitioned to operate under the SGI Neighbourhood House, whose goals align closely with ours. This transition allows MIALS to focus more fully on supporting the island’s older residents while we continue working to build a resilient and inclusive community for all.

The Collective’s role is to make things happen.

We bring the community together, manage projects, secure funding, and provide support needed to turn ideas into action. Guided by the eight focus areas for age-friendly communities, we aim to ensure that all residents—young and old—can thrive:

Outdoor Spaces and Buildings

Creating accessible, safe, and inviting spaces for everyone.

Transportation

Promoting reliable, affordable transportation options to maintain independence and mobility.

Housing

Supporting diverse and accessible housing solutions to meet the needs of all residents.

Social Participation

Encouraging meaningful engagement through events, programs, and activities for all generations.

Respect and Social Inclusion

Fostering collaboration between generations and valuing the contributions of every community member.

Civic Participation and Employment

Empowering residents to participate in decision-making, volunteer opportunities, and flexible work.

Communication and Information

Ensuring that everyone has access to the information they need, in formats that are clear and accessible.

Community and Health Services

Facilitating access to essential health and social services to support the well-being of all residents.
