The Free Program That Reverses Diabetes

Mayne Island is a vibrant community, but with an average age 20 years older than the rest of British Columbia, we face unique health challenges. One of the most pressing is diabetes. According to Statistics Canada, while only 1% of Canadians aged 20 to 39 are diagnosed with diabetes, nearly one in five seniors aged 60 to 79 live with the disease. For Mayne Islanders, these numbers are especially relevant, highlighting the need for proactive measures to manage and prevent diabetes.
As someone who has experienced the challenges of living with diabetes, I understand the physical and emotional toll it takes. But I also know firsthand that change is possible. I recently completed the LifestyleRx 12-week Diabetes Reversal Program, and the results have been life-changing. I want to share this opportunity with you because it could make a real difference in the lives of so many.
What Is Diabetes Doing to Our Community?
Diabetes is often called a silent disease because its early stages can be easy to ignore. But its complications are far from silent—heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, and vision loss are just some of the risks. The cost of medications and monitoring tools can strain budgets, and the constant management can feel overwhelming. For seniors, who may already be balancing multiple health conditions, diabetes adds an extra layer of complexity.
These risks are not inevitable. A growing body of evidence shows that Type 2 diabetes can be reversed for many people by addressing its root cause: insulin resistance.
A Program That Works
The LifestyleRx program is a BC-based initiative that’s fully covered by the Medical Services Plan (MSP). This means there’s no cost barrier for those who want to take control of their health. Over 12 weeks, the program provides the tools and knowledge to:
Eat to Lower Insulin: Learn to make food choices that reduce the demand on your pancreas and improve your metabolism.
Exercise Effectively: Find ways to use your muscles to improve insulin sensitivity without needing to become a fitness fanatic.
Support Liver Health: Understand how to minimize energy overload and maintain a healthy liver.
Burn Fat: Restore your body’s ability to use stored fat for energy, breaking the cycle of insulin resistance.
The program also addresses stress and sleep, two often-overlooked factors that can significantly impact diabetes management.

My Journey
Before joining the program, I was skeptical. I’d heard diabetes described as a chronic, progressive disease that could only be managed, not reversed. But after learning about the science behind insulin resistance and following the program’s guidance, my blood sugar levels stabilized, my energy improved, and I felt like myself again. It wasn’t easy—it required commitment and a willingness to change—but the rewards have been worth every effort.
This isn’t a miracle cure. It’s a structured, evidence-based approach that helps participants understand their unique challenges and create sustainable habits. It’s also a community: you’re not alone in this journey, with support from both the program leaders and fellow participants.
Why This Matters
Given our island’s aging population, the risk of diabetes is higher here than in many other communities. This is not just a personal issue—it’s a community concern. The more we can do to prevent and reverse diabetes, the more we can reduce the strain on healthcare resources and improve quality of life for everyone.
The LifestyleRx program is an opportunity for Mayne Islanders to take control of their health without leaving the island. With virtual group sessions and individual support, it’s accessible even to those with mobility challenges or busy schedules.
