Connecting Generations: How Volunteering Brings Mayne Island Families and Seniors Together

On Saturday November 16th we had a community workshop about community sustainability. A common theme emerged about how attendees felt that Mayne Island felt very special and enticed them to make it their home. Perhaps you feel the same way. What’s the magic ingredient?

We like to say that this island “runs on volunteers” – yes, at the heart of it all is volunteering—a cornerstone of our tight-knit community and where the magic comes through. Whether you’re a busy parent or enjoying your golden years, getting involved can bring joy, connections, and a stronger sense of belonging. Let’s chat about what it is about volunteering that enriches the lives of families and seniors alike.

Why Volunteering Is Great for Families

Quality Family Time: Volunteering is a fun way to spend time together without the screens. Like joining a beach clean-up or helping out at the Fall Fair with your kids. Not only are you making a difference, but you’re also creating cherished family memories.

Teaching Life Lessons: We all want our children to grow up kind and responsible. Volunteering shows them firsthand the importance of helping others and being part of something bigger.

Making New Friends: Volunteering is a fantastic way to meet other families. You might find playdate pals, school buddies, or even lifelong friends.

Fits Into Busy Schedules: We get it—life is hectic! The good news? There are plenty of short-term or one-time volunteer opportunities perfect for busy families. Most island organizations keep a roster of people who are ready to jump in to give a hand.

Why Volunteering Is Awesome for Seniors

Staying Connected: Retirement doesn’t mean slowing down. Volunteering keeps you active and engaged with others. It’s a wonderful way to stay connected and make new friends.

Keeping Mind and Body Active: Staying active is key to feeling your best. Whether it’s light gardening or helping organize events, volunteering can be a fun way to stay on your toes.

Sharing Your Wisdom: You’ve got a lifetime of experiences to share! Volunteering lets you pass on your knowledge and stories to younger generations.

Flexible Opportunities: Not up for anything too strenuous? No problem! There are plenty of ways to contribute that suit your comfort level. Maybe you’d like to mentor a young person, help with community newsletters, or craft items for charity. Every bit makes a difference!

Bringing Everyone Together

One of the best things about volunteering on Mayne Island is how it brings people of all ages together. When families and seniors team up, magic happens! Kids learn from the wisdom of their elders, and seniors feel energized by the enthusiasm of youth.

Volunteering isn’t just about giving back—it’s about connecting, learning, and growing together. Whether you’ve got loads of time or just a little, there’s a spot for you in our volunteer community.

So, what do you say? Ready to make some new friends, have fun, and help make Mayne Island even more wonderful? We’d love to have you join us!
