Dealing With Cancer Treatment

In today’s digital age, we’re inundated with information from social media and the internet. However, knowing where to look and what to look for can be overwhelming, especially as we get older. It’s often through shared experiences, word of mouth, or chance encounters that we find out about valuable resources. This is particularly true for discovering services, programs, and opportunities within our Mayne Island community.

The MayneLiner has generously offered to help bridge this gap. Each month, we aim to provide crucial information to help everyone feel supported and connected, whether you’re embracing your golden years or looking ahead to the future. Mayne Island is a place where community and support are paramount.

Did You Know?

This month the spotlight focuses on a real issue affecting some of our residents: traveling for cancer treatment. Imagine the toll of daily trips to Victoria for essential care. While the Mayne Island Assisted Living Society (MIALS) offers remarkable volunteer driving services, this routine is exhausting for those undergoing treatment. Fortunately, additional support is available.

Cancer Travel and Accommodation Services of BC

A cancer diagnosis brings both emotional and financial challenges. The Travel Treatment Fund, provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, helps reduce the financial burden of traveling for treatment. This fund offers direct payments to patients to cover costs such as fuel and childcare. With online forms, accessing this support is straightforward.

For more information on eligibility and support, call 1-888-939-3333 or visit the Cancer Travel and Accommodation Services BC website (https://cancer.ca/en/living-with-cancer/how-we-can-help/transportation)

Cancer Lodges: A Haven of Support

Beyond financial assistance, finding a comfortable place to stay during treatment is crucial. The Canadian Cancer Society operates four lodges in BC, located in Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, and Prince George. These lodges offer free accommodations, meals, and transportation to treatment facilities for both patients and their companions, thanks to the BC government’s support. For more information, visit https://cancer.ca/en/living-with-cancer/how-we-can-help/accommodation.

It is important to reserve as soon as you know the treatment dates. If accessing this information online feels daunting, MIALS is ready to help. Call 250-213-6191 to get help in all confidentiality.
